Trauma and PTSD therapy in McKinney

After a frightening or painful experience, it is common to feel on edge, relive what happened, avoid reminders, or feel numb and disconnected. When those reactions stay, or when trauma happened again and again over years, therapy can help your mind and body settle and help you feel safe again.

Our McKinney office works with teens and adults from McKinney, Allen, Fairview, Prosper, Frisco and Melissa, in person on Eldorado Parkway or online.

How trauma therapy works at GearingUP

Trauma therapy starts with safety and stability. Before working through painful memories, you learn skills to calm your body, manage flashbacks and strong emotions, and get through hard moments. DBT and CBT skills are a big part of this stage.

When you are ready, your therapist helps you process what happened at a pace that feels manageable, so the memories lose some of their power and the beliefs trauma left behind, like “I am not safe” or “it was my fault”, can shift. GearingUP’s trauma-focused therapies also include EMDR; ask when you call which options fit your needs.

Frequently asked questions

Not before you are ready. Trauma therapy begins with skills for feeling safer and more in control. You decide what to share and when, and your therapist moves at your pace.

Complex trauma comes from repeated or long-lasting experiences, often in childhood or in relationships, rather than a single event. It can affect emotions, relationships and self-worth, and it responds best to steady, skills-based care over time.

Yes. You can meet in person at our McKinney office or online by secure video from home, and you can switch between the two whenever it suits you. Many clients mix both, for example meeting in person at first and online during busy weeks.

McKinney Reviews

Maggie’s consistent instruction in the DBT skills has been a big part of our daughter’s therapy journey. We are happy she is part of our team.

Yazmin is such a great skills therapist! She knows her stuff and helps me apply the skills to my life. I’m loving working with her!

Our daughter sees Ruqiya for her skills training and I have meet with her once. She is a no nonsense, easily relatable therapist who breaks down skills in a way that teens can easily understand and apply.

I have been working with Reanna for a year now and can honestly say she has made such a huge difference in my life in how I handle my emotions, how I recognize my past “traumas” and how to really sit with things. She’s an amazing human ❤️
