Trauma Counseling
Recovering from Trauma
John Briere, Ph.D., a national expert on trauma, reports that up to 80 percent of counseling clients have experienced a trauma that has significantly affected their lives.
Trauma originates in a variety of situations including the loss of a loved one, the loss of predictable income, infidelity, the death of a child, sexual or physical abuse, the threat of illness, and more. In addition, the ordinary circumstances of life including divorce, being bullied at work or a tumultuous, abusive relationship can all lead to significant trauma. Such verbal and emotional abuse can deeply scar even the most resilient of personalities, especially if the criticisms, accusations and threats are vehement, chronic and personal.
Why is Trauma a problem?
Trauma can de-regulate the processing of the mind resulting in over-reactivity, hyper-vigilance, intrusive thoughts and memories and psychological numbing. Compromised functioning, a lack of sustained attention and focus and increasing problems with anxiety, depression and stress are the result. Indecision, worrying and sleeplessness all contribute to the ongoing emotional storm of trauma.
