Meet Dr. Sylvia Scott Gearing

Nationally renowned psychologist and author, Sylvia Gearing, Ph.D. has been a pioneer in psychology for over twenty years. As a talented television expert, popular author, and keynote speaker, she has impacted the lives of millions. Dr. Gearing has been affiliated with CBS News since 2000 and continues to report on a variety of topics including the latest psychology news, current world events, and the latest celebrity news. In addition, she frequently comments on breaking news events to help viewers understand controversial issues and criminal behavior. From 1997 to 1998, she was a frequent contributor in women's issues on NBC's Today Show in New York. Dr. Gearing has appeared on hundreds of newscasts, radio shows, and talk shows including Donahue, Geraldo and Sally Jesse Raphael. Currently, she practices psychology at Gearing Up!, appears on CBS television, and is writing her third book, Masterful Women, Abundant Lives, based on her national study on women and leadership.

Dr. Gearing is a popular speaker in Dallas and around the country. Dr. Gearing graduated Magna cum Laude in psychology from Duke University and completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. She studied at the prestigious Masterson Institute in New York City for several years where she worked with internationally renowned James Masterson M.D. In her clinical practice and in the many leadership positions she has held in hospitals and clinics, Dr. Gearing made many of the discoveries in relationships, stress and women's issues that have brought her national acclaim.

Her first book, Female Executive Stress Syndrome: The Working Woman's Guide to a Balanced and Successful Life (Summit, 1994), launched her national media career (Please See Our Products Page for Ordering Information.) Because of her research in women's stress, she has been featured in many publications including the Chicago Tribune, the Plain Dealer, McCall's, Modern Bride, Ladies Home Journal, Weight Watcher's Magazine, Executive Female, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Dallas Morning News, and First for Women.

In 1995, Dr. Gearing was honored by the National Association of Executive Women for her landmark research on stress in working women. She was featured as the cover model of the association's magazine, which is distributed to over 250,000 women nationally.

Dr. Milton Gearing is a leading expert in communication, conflict resolution, relationship therapy, psychological evaluation, individual psychotherapy and in child and adolescent psychology. A well-known clinical psychologist, author, and speaker, he has treated thousands of people in the North Texas area over the last twenty years. He is known for his compassionate, straightforward approach and for his rapid ability to move his individual clients, couples and families from "gridlock" to "dialogue" and implementation. Dr. Gearing has published in the areas of moral development, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychotic disorders and on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. He continues to research new and innovative approaches to helping individuals and families succeed. He has presented his work at professional conferences and seminars around the country and remains an in-demand speaker.

Dr. Gearing completed his undergraduate education at the College of William and Mary. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Gearing then pursued his post-doctoral training at the prestigious Masterson Institute in New York City. He worked for several years with internationally known Dr. James Masterson and presented at several professional conferences with him. At the Substance Abuse Unit at Terrell State Hospital, Dr. Gearing was the chief psychologist. For several years, Dr. Gearing was the executive director of the Plano Child Guidance Clinic. Later, he headed up the Psychology Department at Charter Hospital where he specialized in children, adolescents and their families. He has been in private practice in Plano since 1986.

Over the last twenty years, Dr. Gearing has conducted hundreds of evaluations and has worked with area schools, psychologists, physicians, counselors and educators to achieve the best results for children and their parents.
